Groups of our Key Stage 3 students were inspired to create and share their own poetry in their English lessons in January thanks to visiting poet and author, Ash Dickinson.
After impressing our budding bards with a selection of his own works, he discussed with them some of the many different forms of verse from around the world, including Haiku, Shadorma and Tricube poetry, and then he encouraged the students to put their own thoughts in to verse. Using the set structure of Tricube and Shadorma poems made the students really have to think about their word choices and continually improve their work.
Ash’s enthusiasm and positivity truly energised and motivated the classes, who were keen to craft poems about their love of sports, snow days, horses and more! Even those students who are normally reluctant writers enjoyed taking part in the workshops and there was no shortage of volunteers to read out their fantastic poems at the end of each session.
This was Ash Dickinson’s ninth visit to Alsager School and we look forward to welcoming the poet back again very soon.
