We recently hosted a Year 10 Careers Focus Day where students were able to choose from a wide variety of guest speaker sessions, ranging from large companies to small businesses as well as local universities and apprenticeship providers. The selection was based on a
student questionnaire completed earlier in the year regarding their future career choices and aspirations.
As a result sessions were run on the day from sectors such as teaching and child care to law, engineering, IT and acting. Participants involved in making the day a success were Reaseheath College in Adventure Sports & Animal Management, Cheshire College South & West – including
careers in the Hair & Make-up sector, Keele University, Edge Hill University, Crewe Soccer School, the NHS, Teaching, the Army, Bentley Motors Ltd., KMF Engineering, Changing Education – sessions on entrepreneurship, Staffordshire University – Music & Sound, Poole Alcock Solicitors, BAE Systems, The Boiler Works – session on creative careers, Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts (LIPA), Tarpey Woodfine Architects, Escalla (IT) & E-Quality Training (Childcare) both on apprenticeship opportunities.
The whole year keynote speech at the start of the day, which was both aspirational and motivational, was delivered by Andy Taylor-Edwards, Creative Director of The Learning Collective Group and the day drew to a close with the students finalising their CV’s & Cover Letters prior to starting Year 11.
It was a busy, but enjoyable, day for all involved and our evaluation shows that it was a very valuable experience for students and gave them a great insight in to the opportunities on offer to them in the future. The following two days were the ‘Go to Work’ shadowing days, allowing students the opportunity to experience a workplace first hand. Again, the evaluation shows that students enjoyed the opportunity of going out to work. Tia Barnett, who went to Mere Moggies said “I really enjoyed the experience as it gave me a good view of what working with animals is like and that is what I would like to do in the future“.
