Entry Requirements: 

You will need to have gained a Grade B or above in GCSE Art and Design or another creative subject. In certain cases a student not having taken Art will be considered on the basis of a suitable portfolio of work.

Course Details: 

Fine Art or Graphic Design

You will be taught to make informed decisions about your own creative practice, in a culture of experimentation, exploration and critical reflection.

You will learn how to use a broad range of materials and techniques influenced and inspired by the work of contemporary and traditional artists, designers, photographers and any other visual source. The art tutors will expect you to investigate and question your own practice and to take imaginative and creative risks in the work you produce.

Each individual student will develop their own visual style influenced by the taught workshops. The skills you will develop will be wide and varied with a particular focus on visual and creative perception involving drawing for different purposes and needs.

You will be working in the art department in which we have 3 large studios and facilities enabling us to explore intaglio printing, ceramics, photography with studio lighting and digital manipulation using Adobe Photoshop.


AS: 60% Portfolio (Unit 1)  40% Externally-Set Assignment (Unit 2)


The AS Portfolio Unit and the A2 Personal Investigation unit will run from September through to the end of January.

In February you will be given the externally set assignment in which you select one starting point/theme and then produce a creative project addressing all 4 of the assessment objectives.

Career Options: 

Direct entry to university, studying a wide range of Art and Design courses. Entry to a one year foundation courses such as Newcastle-under-Lyme College, or other BTEC Art and Design Courses.
