Over a 100 year 8 students took part in the MMU Youth Engagement Project workshops over 26th and 27th April. Students learnt about the work and campaigning of Ada Nield Crewe, an influential suffragist from Crewe, through examining her protest letters to the Crewe Chronicle.
Students worked in small groups to discuss Ada’s progressive attitudes to workers’ rights and gender equality. They considered how far the status of women and girls in and around Crewe today has changed since, and whether Ada would be pleased or disappointed.
Finally students were encouraged to create artistic responses using what they had learnt about Ada and the status of women. We had some amazing responses including songs, dramatic scripts, letters, newspapers, banners and posters.
